The marketing of the free sessions on 19th September has generated some real interest amongst schools, Children’s Centres and LAs in Quality Mark for Extended Services Providers across LAs. With schools in 82 LAs already engaged with Quality Mark, there is considerable knowledge of the process and benefits. With increased Ofsted focus on standards of literacy and numeracy, the award provides a mechanism for demonstrating the contribution that extended services make to learning and to progress in literacy, numeracy and communication skills.

Representatives of two ‘clusters’ in different London LAs are now keen to achieve the award following the free sessions and are beginning to gather evidence. ‘Cluster’ accreditation for a main lead provider and up to four other partners is a cost effective way of achieving the award. It is possible for a centre to achieve the award as part of a lead school’s submission.

Kent LA has now signed an SLA with us to deliver QM ESP across interested schools and other providers. With a royalty fee for introducing schools/providers to the QM (ESP) and the fees generated by undertaking assessments, several LAs are now considering it as part of ‘traded services’. It would be possible to be trained as an assessor to support an LA adopting the award.

We would be pleased to hear from you if you would like to find out more about developments and how you can be involved.

Wear Education Centre at Durham Amateur Rowing Club welcomed a World Champion Gold Medallist from a different sport on Friday 17th June 2011. Nicola Minichiello, former Heptathlete was asked to try out for the GB Bobsleigh team after an injury meant that she missed the Olympics in Sydney. Her determination meant that she became a champion in this new sport also. Nicola visited the club through a joint project between Sky Sports Living for Sport, Dene Community School of Technology and Durham Playing for Success. All these partners joined together to work on a project called ‘Learning to Lead’. The activities will take place at Durham County Cricket Club and Durham Amateur Rowing Club.

The young people from Dene Community School of Technology Years 7–10 are a mixed group of School Council Representatives and Future Business Magnates. They will also visit Durham County Cricket Club and return to the rowing club on 7th July 2011 to work on the project.

Chris Carling Operational Lead for Durham Education Development Service said:
“It is an excellent opportunity for our children to work with a World Champion Athlete and experience the personal qualities needed to succeed at the highest level in sport and also in life.”

Quotes from students:
“Today was brilliant I have been inspired to follow my dreams to think that anything is possible if I stick to it and if I believe I can do it and I have been told this by Nicola. Thanks Nicola”

“If Nicola can do it brought up from her background then so can anyone. The story of her life made me realise that life isn’t just a bubble and if you want something you need to try your hardest to get it. Simply by hard work and sheer determination”
